Starting your new fitness regime

Starting something new can be daunting.  A new journey, job or goal can take us closer to where we want to be.  But the hardest part is starting!  Now the gyms are back open and we have more freedom, you might be starting a new fitness venture.  If you’re starting a new fitness regime, you want to get started on the right foot.  Feeling inspired, motivated and ready to smash your goals!  Here are some ways you can kick start your new regime in the best possible way.

Schedule your workouts like an appointment

You wouldn’t miss a doctors appointment or a hairdressers appointment if you’d already booked it in.  So block out your workout sessions or classes in the same way.  Put the date in your diary.  Write it on your calendar.  Set a reminder on your phone.  Hold yourself accountable for your success and book ahead of time to make sure you MAKE TIME.

Do what you enjoy

If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you’re not going to stick to it.  Focus on what you enjoy about your new fitness regime.  Is it the structure and routine it gives to your day?  The way it makes you feel?  Or the results you see?  By remembering why it makes you happy and why it makes you feel good, it connects positive feelings and emotions to what you are doing.  So when it’s time to do it again, you will feel excited!

Think long term!

Think about making your fitness regime sustainable.  Focusing on longevity and enjoyment.  You don’t want to reach burnout within weeks and give up on your new regime.  Create something you can stick to realistically.  Work with the time you know you have, that you can really dedicate.  Be inspired and motivated by your own journey and progress, and make it something you always want to keep up.  For your health and your wellbeing, not just short term results.

Start where you are, work with what you have

Listen to your body!  Don’t be too hard on yourself as you start out.  It’s better to start off slow and build a progressive fitness regime, than starting with a bang and not being able to keep it up, or getting injured!  Respect your body for where it is today, thank it for everything it already does for you, and gently encourage it to step up to the next level.

Track your progress

Especially as you start a new fitness regime it can be easy to become disheartened.  But tracking your progress can help you to stay motivated along the way.  Using a tool such as a journal, fitness app, habit tracker or our Weekly Inspire Planner.  Writing down your progress will help you to stay accountable and stay on top of your achievements.  Celebrate your successes and work on your weaknesses.
